Today, I enjoyed a Portrait session with my Lovely Daughter Emma, and her good friend, Rachel. I chose an outdoor location and late in the afternoon, using outside lighting Viz, a Softbox Stobe, with available light from the ambient light that was there at the time of the shoot. Underexposing the ambient light and then providing the Stobe lighting from the Softbox, I was able to achieve a pleasing effect as is seen in this image. I would like to thank Emma and Rachel for their help in making the shoot fun and productive. !

Well – It’s here..the evidence is evident… the days are stretching ahead into Spring , the Lambs have arrived and so has wonderful Spring. For me, the best time of the year. As a photographer, I am aware that we have a while to go until those long bright evenings and early Dawns but, the fact is there that we have it all to look forward to. You only have to listen. The birds are abundant , full of purpose soon to be parents again as they fulfil springs promise. Compared to last year and the year before, so far, we can say that winter has been kinder to us all . I am sure that those resident birds that have wintered in Ireland have appreciated it, as well as many other creatures. !
I have of course continued to shoot sports during the winter. Gaelic sports seem to continue all year around, with only a short pause for breath. The players around the country – Towns and villages alike, continue to train and fine tune their fitness levels. A more dedicated bunch of sportsmen you would find difficult to equal in any sport anywhere. They never cease to impress me on the field of play. I have to say that when I watch those Soccer players on TV from the luxury of my sofa, I find myself comparing them to GAA players here in Ireland . From the point of view of the physical aspect of the sports and the way that they handle the knocks and turmoil of their relevant sports. As immensely paid professionals in Soccer, although of course fit and dedicated to their soccer they cannot compare to the those lads, unpaid and driven by the love of GAA as they battle each weekend on the field of play… in all weathers in almost every village and town in the country. They rise to the challenge, fall and play through the rain and pain of the game. Again and again. Now compare it to the Soccer Star in the premier league say….? Can you possibly compare them ? No, you can’t. As an Englishman, now living in this country , I stand in Aw at every game that I attend, each weekend usually, in the rain and cold, camera in hand. Hats off to you lads. !!!
On the bookings front, I am pleased to say that so far, enquiries have been coming in for Weddings and the like. From as far away as Darwin Australia, via the wonders of the Internet my inbox has produced mail from couples , enquiring about photography services. For most, early days in the planning of the most important day of their lives. As a photographer I am privileged to be a part of their wedding experience and aware of the enormous responsibility in undertaking my role to produce high quality images for them to treasure for life. After all, when the day is over after all its preparation and delivery what is left ? Of course the joy of many happy years of marriage ahead and the memories of the Wedding day. And to focus on those memories as the years pass….. The very images that I am tasked to record .

I had the pleasure of travelling to Barbados to photograph the wedding of Sarah and Mike in 2010. This image was shot just after Dawn on the beach on the South East side of the Island. Mike and Sarah were delighted to get up early, and since this was a day or so after the wedding, they even ” Trashed the Dress”, by jumping in the Sea after the Shoot when it warmed up.. !! Thanks Mike and Sarah, was a pleasure to share your Wedding in Barbados.

Well, this last month or so has been a very busy one. In my part , thankfully to the Rugby World Cup. To Explain – My work with the Nenagh Guardian normally keeps me occupied at weekends at a comfortable pace. However during this last period, the main Photographer, Bridget , was down under covering the Rugby World Cup ; which meant that I would step in her shoes to some degree and therefore my work at GAA matches around the County practically doubled. This was most welcome to me and I got to cover my first All Ireland Final at Croke Park, Dublin. I had the privilege to cover the Minor Final in which Tipperary Minor Football team played Dublin and won a great victory at Croke Park. As a sports photographer, so far, this was one of my highlights in my Career. Having checked my accreditation I was pointed to a corner of the ground, beside Hill 16 and a bunch of other Photographers busily checking their equipment. All very friendly and we commenced to Shoot the game with our long lenses. During the final minutes of the game, I noticed that one of the players was appearing larger than normal in my lens and continued in my direction until ( Too late to react), he was in the laps of the Photographers with me as the main recipient. This was caught on TV and watching the recording of the incident the commentator commented, ” Getting up close and personal with the Snappers ) ! Guess it’s all part of the job.
So there you have it . A busy Snapper of late. Very enjoyable from a photographers point of view. The only downside of my work of late, has been the appalling weather here in Ireland. Last weekend, I believe that record rainfall has drenched the Country , in particular the East Coast. Sadly this has been at a cost, not only in flooding damage to properties and property, but in life. A young Garda was swept away to his death in County Wicklow whilst, he was helping his community in warning others of the danger at a nearby Bridge . He was lost downriver and later his body recovered some time later the following morning. My thoughts go to his family and friends. There was another tragic victim to the flooding in Dublin , when a women was trapped in a her basement flat after heavy rainfall. I understand the lady was a Filipino born Irish Citizen who worked in a Hospice locally. Dreadful.
As for Photography in these conditions, the Camera is protected from the elements by its weather sealing. As a Professional level Camera, the Canon 1ds Mk3 is designed to continue working in all conditions. I do not suppose that it is Waterproof, as in underwater photography, but, in wet and rainy conditions, so far at least, it has done its duty well (apart from Misting up on the outside of the lens and fogging the image) However , for peace of mind I use an external protective cover. This fits around the Camera Body and lens allowing operation of the camera in harsh conditions in the full knowledge that there is no penetration of water through to the Camera or Lens. My actual cover is manufactured by a company called ” Think Tank Photo” The covers a slightly expensive, although when you consider the equipment that you are protecting may be in excess of Ten Thousand Euro, then it makes sense to Operate ” Safe Camera All weather Shooting” I sometimes refer to mine as a ” Camera Condom” !! In my case the Camera is around 5K and the 300mm 2.8 lens another 5K.. A Wise investment I think.
So this brings me to the end of this particular Blog update. I do hope that I am not typing to myself and would be MOST GRATEFUL , if any reader that stumbles upon my post could just ” Comment” on the thread and let me know . Bye for now…
